Longwood, Florida, along with its neighboring regions, boasts a rich history that spans thousands of years. The area was originally settled by indigenous tribes who used natural landmarks to navigate through the territory. He named the area after a suburb in Boston and established its first post office in 1878. Hench’s efforts were instrumental in connecting Longwood to broader networks and making it more attractive to newcomers.

He also helped create the South Florida Railroad, enhancing travel accessibility within Florida and boosting the area’s appeal as a winter vacation destination. Hench served as Longwood’s mayor in 1885 and by the end of the century, he had become a central figure in the community, contributing to its growth through various enterprises, including the start of the first weekly newspaper. By 1886, Longwood’s population exceeded 1,000 residents, not counting the numerous tourists it attracted annually.

However, the area faced significant challenges, particularly during the Great Freeze at the end of the 1800s, which devastated the local economy and reduced the population by two-thirds. Despite this setback, the community rebounded between 1910 and 1920 as the economy recovered and fears of another freeze subsided.

Today, Longwood continues to grow and develop, with many visitors drawn to its mild winters and various attractions. While the permanent population remains robust, much of its economic activity is driven by seasonal residents or “snowbirds.” The future looks promising for Longwood, as it continues to be a favored destination for many.
